Service mesh is an infrastructure-based architectural pattern that allows us to smartly manage connection between parts of distributed systems, sitting on different clouds.
Ever since last year, when we looked into service mesh, using Istio as an example, lots of things have changed. Conduit has turned into Linkerd 2.0, Istio has solved all the performance problems, and every cloud provider is now boasting their very own service mesh. And, most importantly, we now have an official specification — SMI Spec!
That's what we're going to discuss:
- What SMI Spec includes.
- Why everyone want service mesh, and why they want it now.
- How service mesh can help us with progressive delivery.
- And, finally, how to understand whether your system and you personally need service mesh.
