Linkerd: the Hard Way

Can a service mesh "just work"? One of the solutions, Linkerd, is a lightweight, minimalistic and easy-to-configure one. Is it possible to take it, install it and get a working service mesh? Or will you have to dive deep into various open-source solutions and likely write your own?
